What this part does
The evaporator is the heat exchanger that cools the air blown into the cabin. Refrigerant expands inside its passages, takes heat out of the air flowing through it, and that chilled air is what reaches the vents.
Because the evaporator is the coldest point in the system, moisture from the air condenses on it. That is where the water dripping under the car after a drive with the A/C on comes from — normal operation, not a fault.

Can it be changed without removing the dashboard? On the C4 Cactus, no. The evaporator is inside the air conditioning box and the dashboard has to come out. If someone tells you otherwise, ask which route they intend to take.
My A/C smells — will a new evaporator fix it? Usually not. The smell comes from deposits on the fins and a damp cabin filter. Start with the filter and a cleaning treatment — the difference in cost runs into hundreds.
