What this part does
MultiAir is the system in which the intake valves are not driven straight off the cam, but through pressurised oil and very fast solenoid valves. The actuator is that whole module: it sits on the cylinder head, takes the push from the camshaft and decides how much of that movement reaches the valves.
That lets the ECU vary lift and timing on the fly, with no mechanical variable valve gear. The layout gives good torque and flexibility, but the entire job of controlling the valves rests on this single module.
When it needs replacing

Check the oil before you order. MultiAir is unusually sensitive to oil quality and level — the module works on engine oil pressure. Neglected services are the shortest route to killing it. A new module running on old, tired oil will go the same way.
