What this part does
This is the front cover of the engine. It closes the timing chain compartment, carries the oil galleries and holds the integrated oil filter housing — the black cylinder you can see in the photos goes with the cover.
Cast aluminium part. The crankshaft seal is already seated in its bore.
When it needs replacing
A timing cover does not wear out by itself. It gets replaced when the sealing face or the seal seat has failed:
