What this part does
The catalytic converter finishes burning in the exhaust gas what the engine did not have time to burn. A ceramic monolith coated with precious metals turns carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, and breaks nitrogen oxides back down into nitrogen.
Without a working catalyst the car will not pass its emissions test, and the ECU will light the warning lamp sooner or later.
