The starter is an electric motor that turns the crankshaft through its pinion and the flywheel ring gear until the engine fires. Brushes, the drive pinion and the solenoid contacts are what usually wear out. Watch for a single click when you turn the key, slow cranking with a healthy battery, grinding on start-up, or a starter that spins without engaging the flywheel.
Before ordering, compare the OE number on the starter label, check the gearbox type (manual or automatic), the number of pinion teeth and the mounting bolt pattern. The most reliable way is to match it by VIN.
