What this part does
The expansion tank, also called the coolant reservoir, absorbs the change in coolant volume as the engine heats up and cools down. It holds the working pressure in the system and lets you bleed the circuit.
When it needs replacing

An expansion tank cracks quietly. There is usually no puddle under the car — the coolant leaves as vapour with the engine hot, and all the driver sees is a level that keeps dropping.
